Shelly and Sands, Inc. started paving the new South runway at the Columbus Airport project Monday, the 16^th of April 2012. They are shown utilizing two Vogele vision series 5200-2 pavers. They are paving 25 feet wide in echelon and they are utilizing the latest in the state of the art screed automation from Vogele, Dual NEVELTRONICS big skis set up to 47 feet long. They are using two skis per paver to do longitudinal averaging, allowing the second pavers ski to overlap the first paver’s pass getting great averaging over the 50’ section.

Behind one paver they are shown utilizing the newly designed low profile Hamm GRW280 30 ton pneumatic tired roller as breakdown compactor along with the Hamm HD130HV 84” vibratory and newly designed Hamm HD120+OV 78” oscillatory nondestructive compactor as finish roller on the P401 base mix being laid at a depth of 4+- inches and are getting perfect density results. Paving in echelon allows the center joint to be considered as a full mat without having to meet the stringent longitudinal density requirements of the FAA. McLean Company and VT Leeboy Customer Race Day

Well in spite of a very rainy September 23, (Friday) the 2011 ADRL sanctioned race at Summit Raceway Park in Norwalk, Ohio was very successful for The McLean Company’s annual customer appreciation day. Quain Stott racing qualified with his 1963 Pro Extreme Chevrolet Corvette with an almost 200 mph 3.72 times in the 1/8 mile track. Due to the rain on Friday no qualifying runs took place that day so Saturday they were limited to two runs. Quain got his qualifying on his first run. He had problems with tire shake the rest of the day even when the real racing began he had a great start but had to let go of the throttle to keep the car from tearing itself apart and was then eliminated. Quain was as always the fan friendly host and took care of the 100+ customers through the pit area. Lunch was served and beverages provided for still a very fun day of racing. Thanks again to VT Lee Boy for bringing Quain Stott racing back to Norwalk, Ohio.

Kokosing Construction with Wirtgen W210

Kokosing Construction Company recently purchased the latest in the state of the art of milling machines from The McLean Company. Kokosing purchased a Wirtgen W210 dual engine machine this past winter and put it to work this spring at the Cleveland Hopkins airport. This will make 5 Wirtgen machines that Kokosing has purchased from The McLean Company.

At Cleveland Hopkins airport they are shown milling a taxi-way. The first pass they milled was up to 9″ deep 72” wide and was milling an average of 36′ per minute. The second pass being a little harder aggregate they milled at 8.5″ depth and averaged 32′ per minute. They were very pleased with the production of the machine.

One unique feature is this W210 is designed with 2 engines and the onboard computer systems can determine the engine output for simple maneuvering and traveling. It may only require one engine in use; however as the demand for HP increases for milling applications the computer will put the second engine into action. This is a considerable fuel savings instead of running one higher HP engine at higher rpm’s all the time. Fuel savings can range up to 20-30% over the conventional drive train. The engine can run in 3 different work ranges manually. Kokosing opted to run it in the medium setting, which is 1800 rpm. Economy setting is 1600 rpm and high setting is 2100 rpm. They felt they got their best production at that setting.

Wirtgen’s exclusive Level Pro Multi-Plex non contact averaging system was utilized during the asphalt removal for more accuracy for profilograph requirements on smoothness asphalt paving. For more on the W210 and Level-Pro and for Kokosing Construction, see the attached link.

Chagrin Valley Paving Wirtgen W120F

Paul Phillips owner of Chagrin Valley Paving proudly stands by his new 2010 Wirtgen Milling machine model W120F, This machine is shown cutting a controlled depth of 1.25” deep on a street paving project utilizing the new Wirtgen dual grade and slope system Level Pro. The second section of the project shows roadway full removal of 9” deep. Paul decided on the Wirtgen because of its tremendous production capability and yet is sized right for mobilization with the folding conveyor feature and right hand rear corner location of the cutter head. Another feature of Chagrin Valley Paving’s W120F is the optional Flexible Cutter System (FCS) which will allow, if purchased (optional drums) to go to widths of 2 ft., 3 ft., and the standard 4 ft wide cutter head. The machine has the ability to cut over 12-13” deep in one pass. Paul with the purchase of the W120 became a 3 amigo customer owning Vogele, Hamm and Wirtgen Products purchased from The McLean Company. Shelly & Sands, Inc Paving with Vogele Vision Series Paver

Shelly and Sands, Inc is putting to good use the latest in technology from The Wirtgen Group’s Vogele paver division in Mannheim, Germany with the purchase of 2 new Vogele Vision series pavers model 5200-02 rubber track pavers, one for the Columbus Division and one for the Akron Division.

They also decided to incorporate the latest in technology for the Columbus based machine with two Niveltronics Big Ski averaging systems. This system in built in house at Vogele and allows you to reference a bigger foot print for meeting the tougher IRI smoothness profilagraph requirements set today by ODOT. The Niveltronics system also comes standard with dual grade and slope controls already incorporated in the screed operator consoles.

Another important choice when choosing the Vogele Vision Series paver was the auto lube system that takes care daily of the feed and material handling system on board the machine.

Most important in making the buying decision was the support that they have received from The McLean Company and the co-involvement of Vogele’s service, engineering and management teams in handling all issues.

LeeBoy 9000 Rubber Tire Paver Built for Production on Large Commercial Applications

LINCOLNTON, N.C. – At CONEXPO, VT LeeBoy, Inc. introduced its 9000 Asphalt Paver, a 33,000-pound paver featuring a maneuverable, rubber tire design and an 8-foot electrically-heated screed system.

This high production rubber tire asphalt paver is powered by a 173-HP CAT Tier 3 diesel engine, which provides the power to push larger tandem axle trucks with ease. The engine is transversely mounted, which allows for better ground level access and cooling efficiency. A fume ventilation system vents asphalt vapors away from the operator and screed area. Two Series 90 variable displacement pumps drive paver functions. An easily raised hood covers the low profile engine and side grating is easily removed to provide access to the engine compartment.

The LeeBoy 9000 operator stations are designed for maximum comfort and ease of operation. It includes dual hydraulic slide-out operator stations to enhance fore and aft visibility with fully equipped consoles that incorporate CAN Bus system design and digital gauges for monitoring paver functions and diagnostics. Paver steering is by Plus 1 control architecture with touch pads.

The 9000 rubber tired paver provides excellent maneuverability, ground speed, ride quality and traction. The tire system is comprised of two large heavy-duty low pressure rear 19” x 29.5” drive tires. The 12 x 22 inch solid rubber front tandem steering bogie wheels oscillate to improve mat quality by overriding roadbed irregularities.

The material handling system on a 9000 paver begins with an 11-ton receiving hopper with heavy-duty, hydraulic radius hopper wings and high strength plastic flashing to prevent material spillage. Dual 18” heavy-duty slat bar and roller chain conveyors feed the 16” diameter hardened cast steel augers that push asphalt to the screed. The auger assembly can be hydraulically raised and lowered, which is helpful in the loading and unloading process. Standard sonic feed sensors control the augers. The operator has independent left and right control of the conveyor system and material flow gates. Manual tunnel extensions are available to keep mix away from the drive tire.

The 9000 paver has a heavy-duty electrically heated and vibrating Legend Screed System that extends hydraulically from 8- to 15.5-feet. An onboard 20 Kw generator electrically heats the main screed and the front-mounted extensions. LeeBoy’s exclusive heat element replacement system makes replacing heating components easy. Adjustable screed extensions feature a 9 degree slope.

A two-speed motor with single reduction planetary torque hub allows the 9000 paver to travel at speeds up to 13 mph. The 9000 paver can pave at speeds up to 250 fpm.

Fluid capacities are among the largest for this size paver with an 82-gallon fuel tank, 86-gallon hydraulic oil capacity and 15-gallon citrus washdown tank.

Wirtgen Group W120F

Wirtgen America Inc. will exhibit the new W 120 F at Conexpo-Con/Agg 2008 in Las Vegas in March.

Part of a new line of midsized mills, the W 120 F is a high-performance cold milling machine with a drum width of 48 inches (120 cm), ideal for removing complete asphalt courses with a milling depth of 0 to 12.6 inches (0 to 320 mm). Its engine output is 304 hp, and it replaces the W 1200 F/T in the product line.

The W 120 F has a hydraulic swinging track for flush cutting, and features front-end loading of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) via a two-part conveyor system. The machine is available in a tracked version but can be ordered in a wheeled version.

The optional Flexible Cutter System (FCS) permits the use of different milling drums with working widths of up to 48 in. and a variety of line spacings. And the W 120 F will be equipped with the new Wirtgen Level Pro® leveling system.

Wirtgen also will exhibit the new WR 2000 XL recycler/stabilizer, with a 94-in. cutting drum and 425 hp engine.

Shelly and Sands: GOMACO Commander III

Shelly and Sands of Zanesville, Ohio put in 2006 a new Gomaco New Generation Commander III 4 track barrier wall machine to work, it incorporates the G21 network control system designed and built by Gomaco for precise control of steering and grade in pouring critical concrete jobs. On the I-270 State Route 161 ramp project the job required an open back barrier mold to open against a wall. This was accomplished by the control system using smart steering cylinders; another job was to pour on I-71 north bound exit at State Route 665 a 50” high barrier wall for ODOT.

The Ohio Department of Transportation: LeeBoy 8500 Training

The Ohio Department of Transportation recently awarded The McLean Company an order for several Lee Boy 8500 Low deck asphalt paving machines and Rosco Maximizer II asphalt distributors due to excellent dealer support and past performance of the machines. As one official put it we purchased the paving equipment from the dealer that is in the paving business. Pictured are the classroom training sessions featuring the 8500 by Scott McLean of the McLean Company and Brian hall of Lee Boy. ODOT trainees actually learned the ins and outs of the machine by paving sand with the instructor’s guidance and help.

Shelly and Sands, Inc recently purchased from The McLean Company their 6th Vogele asphalt paver. The fleet of Vogele America machines consists of 3 wheeled and 3 rubber high speed track units. One of main considerations when deciding on which manufacturer’s machine they were going to purchase was local support and support from the respective manufacturer. The owning and operating costs of all these machines have been impressive according to management. The last two units put into operation are pictured below of which are high speed rubber track units. These units all incorporate Topcon series V dual grade and slope along with Topcon’s SAS averaging ski.
