Erie Blacktop put their new Hamm HD 120 V oscillatory roller to work on a 1-1/4” non compacted 9.5mm Super Pave surface course job. This mix was tough to compact utilizing traditional vibratory high frequency machines in the breakdown mode. It was decided by McLean Company representatives with Chris Schaeffer of Erie Blacktop permission to try using the Oscillatory roller in breakdown mode using just the Oscillatory drum only. The density then jumped up to an acceptable number after a 4000 vpm machine would not get the density numbers required in the breakdown mode.
Shelly and Sands uses the oscillatory technology from Hamm Compaction to help themselves out of a tough application on US RT 23 in Chillicothe, Ohio. The job requirements were two asphalt 12mm lifts over joint repaired concrete that carried smoothness and density requirements. This is a problem for all contractors in Ohio (see Flexible Pavements article link) http://www.flexiblepavements.org/images/techbullcrackseal.pdf
Traditional vibratory rollers were first used to compact the material. Joint repair bumps would occur so it was determined by Ed Morrison of Shelly and Sands QC department to try using the new Hamm oscillatory roller technology along with old technology of the pneumatic tired roller. Both worked very well in getting rid of the bump reoccurrence.
Shelly and Sands, Inc Mansfield division utilizes their Companies new Hamm Oscillatory roller model HD 90 V on some of their toughest paving jobs. One recently was the Marion County airport laying a P401 FAA mix 2” thick prior to compaction on a fiber mat product to prevent reflective cracking. Density was being achieved at mat temperatures down to 130 degrees, picking up .5-1.0 points on the nuclear density gauge. A tough FAA density specification is required on the longitudinal joint. This was achieved buy use of the Oscillatory roller at much lower mat temperatures instead of traditional vibratory rollers used in this application at much higher mat temperatures.
Another benefit to the non destructive nature of the roller was smoothing off take off points from a transverse joint.
